NewImpact: Streamlining Access to Data for Tri-Sector Innovation

About the Project

We have a world of resources, and there are many innovators around the world, but there are many resources not used effectively. While many organizations exist to address public interest and social good issues, there is a disconnect between those looking for resources and organizations that provide them. Given the overwhelming amount of resources and organizations in existence it can feel impossible to know where to start when looking for tools that fit your needs. The NewImpact Wiki serves as a free open online directory of companies, non profit organizations, government agencies and others that have resources and tools involved in various impact areas.

Summary of Actions

Iteration 1: We focused our first quarter on understanding & refining NewImpact's existing wiki tool in Kibana

Iteration 2: Next, we envisioned a future version of the wiki utilizing Tableau for data visualizations

Our Approach and Scope

As for NewImpact Wiki, we focus on helping users find relevant organizations and resources based on their specific needs through exploration and targeted search. Users may have questions like:

"What organizations in my area are working on issues related to undocumented immigrants?"

"Where can I find an organization working on voter registration with language translation resources?"

More Examples could include searching for data about a particular topic, such as farmers markets in a specific region, or finding test data for a project. Conducting a string search is often inefficient and unintuitive and may not yield relevant results. Users can search all fields or specific fields across the database through their demanded filter. However, this approach can be less user-friendly as it requires understanding the data structure, and results can include unrelated organizations.

Key Features

Search & Filter

Users will be able to narrow down the organization and programs by entering a variety of parameters, including State, County, City. Users can also choose to filter by Impact Area of the organization. Users will also be able to filter the programs by public, private, or social organizations.

Export & Share Data

The table will react to the filter the user selected, and the users can choose to export the data in this table. The file will be in CSV format.

Geo-Mapped Resources

The map is color coded to the amount of organizations in each state, and it also works as a filter. Users will be able to interact with the map, and click to see the number of organizations in the state. The table will also be filtered when users select a state by clicking on the map.
